Makueni County Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Chairman Erastus Kimetu has called upon schools to make tree planting exercise a priority during the rainy season.
Speaking at Wote town, Kimetu said that the country is currently facing climate change and conservation of environment should be embraced by planting more trees starting at the school level.
“Let teachers make this as a habit, our area experiences long dry season and it is good to take advantage of the rains by planting trees. They will grow to a point where they only need little water by time the rainy season is over,” Kimetu said.
He observed that school management should visit local forestry departments in both National and County governments to get the seedlings.
He also called upon all those wishing to donate seedlings to do so in plenty especially in schools and others institutions.
“Kindly let us not plant the trees for fun. Teachers try and teach the children on proper planting and nurturing of the trees even when dry season kicks in,” he added.
The chairman further urged parents to make sure their children have forest zones at home and that parents should task themselves to guide the young ones on the culture of planting trees so that they grow conserving the environment.
The leader observed the future of humanity will depend on taking care of environment with dignity. He called upon all leaders to help where they can in environmental conservation.
