Follow laid down regulations in expelling students, principals told

The Ministry of Education has asked Principals to follow set procedures while handling discipline cases with students in school citing the rising number of parents who flock its headquarters at Jogoo House complaining of the manner in which their children were expelled.

While addressing the school heads on Tuesday during this year’s Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) Conference at Sheikh Zayed Hall in Mombasa, Director in charge of Secondary Education Paul Kibet stressed that it is only Principals who are allowed to suspend a student from school.

He noted that despite the Deputy Principal being the head of discipline in school, they are neither allowed to suspend nor expel a student from school, adding that an official from the Ministry and the student’s guardian must be present during the hearing of the discipline cases.

Kibet also told the school heads to ensure that all school rules and regulations are fully approved by the Board of Management (BoM) and subjected to public participation for ease of implementation.

He further called on them to acknowledge capitation funds received revealing that 72 schools have never acknowledged receipt of the funds since July last year.

Director in charge of Project Coordination and Delivery Elijah Mungai asked the school heads not to send students home for school fees.

The sentiments were echoed Director in charge of School Audit Victoria Angwenyi who added that the government has provided all the required learning resources.
