Principals urged to allow teenage mothers to continue learning

As Form One students begin joining secondary school this week, the Western Regional Education Director Stephen Barongo has called on Principals to allow teenage mothers who did not complete their education to go back to school.

“For those children who got impregnated while in school and became young mothers, our stand is that their parents should take care of the babies and allow them to go back to school through the re-entry policy,” Barongo said.

While speaking in Kakamega, the Director further urged parents to ensure that all 2022 KCPE candidates enroll to secondary schools, insisting that the government’s directive on 100 per cent transition must be observed without failure.

He said that the Ministry of Education was working closely with the Ministry of Interior to make sure all students report to school, failure to which parents will be held liable.

Barongo warned parents who send their children to work as house-helps, gardeners and other menial jobs that they will face the wrath of the law together with their proponent employers.

“Education is for every child and those who will be found abetting child labour, which is against the law in Kenya, stern legal measures will be taken against them. We shall work with Chiefs and Assistant Chiefs to see to it that all the children go to school,” he said.
