At 5 am in the hilly and chilly village in Kambusu in Matungulu sub county, at Kambusu High School students trek to school in groups.
The weather is so cold and unbearable but the students storm it since remaining at home isn’t an option as there isn’t any food there.

On the other hand, in school, they are offered tea and bread daily at 10:00 am.
The school’s principal Samuel Kithome said before they introduce the tea programme, there were many cases of absenteeism.
“We currently have 100 per cent attendance. The tea and bread offered has helped retain students in school,” he proudly said.
He noted that parents were concerned about their children’s education and proposed for the establishment of a bakery in the school.
“Parents contributed Ksh 600 per term which helped pay for the baking machine in installments,” he narrated.
Kimothe added that retention of students in school has improved academic performance.
“We are proud of our performance. In 2021 KCSE, Simon Mavii from the school was recognized among the most improved students in the country,” he proudly said.
