Thanks to the Centre for Mathematics Science and Technology Education in Africa (CEMASTEA), the heads of secondary schools in Elgeyo Marakwet are attending CBC training.
The seminar, which takes place at Kaptagat Girls High School, focuses on Curriculum implementation, assessment, and the management of pathways.
CEMASTEA Director George Karuja lauded the exercise, saying it will help ensure seamless implementation of CBC for the benefit of learners.
“CEMASTEA normally carries out what we call need-based training, and before launching this programme, we conducted a needs assessment through an online survey. The principals could indicate the areas they would like capacity building on,” he said.
Addressing the press, Karuja said they carried out an online survey in which principals indicated areas where they needed capacity building.

The teachers were also taken through the basic STEM requirements and how to appreciate students taking STEM courses, with Karuja revealing that most schools in the region have the requisite facilities.
“The first one was understanding the curriculum implementation itself and assessment. The second area was how they would manage the pathways. We discussed the basic requirement and also the idea of making them appreciate those taking STEM subjects,” added Karuja.
Kapcherop Girls Principal Rosemary Chepkun welcomed the training, which she described as timely. This further assured her of their preparedness to absorb the grade 9 learners next year.
“The infrastructure we have, I believe, is ready, and they can absorb those learners from junior school. This one has come in very timely, and I believe it would go a long way to prepare each and every one of us because we have been taken in-depth,” added Chepkun.
Grade 9 learners are set to join Senior Secondary School next year, and pressure is mounting on the government to address the confusion surrounding CBC.
