The results of the 10th edition of the Cross-County JET Exams were officially released over the weekend at St Romanos Matawa Secondary School in Mumias West Sub-County.

The event brought together principals, teachers, and students from participating schools across Siaya, Kakamega, and Bungoma counties.

The chief guest at the event was Mumias West Sub-County Director of Education, Spacia Akello, who commended the initiative and highlighted the region’s academic potential.

“Mumias West is the pinnacle of academics, and I am pleased to see so many schools from our sub-county participating in this challenge,” she said.

Mrs Akello praised the programme’s organisation and the insightful presentations from subject specialists.

She urged students to maximise the opportunity, emphasising discipline, consultation with teachers, and consistent revision.

“Some schools do not have such programs, but your principals saw the value in joining. You must strive for excellence and become ambassadors for your peers,” she advised.

She also encouraged learners to remain focused, avoid distractions, and aim for top grades in the KCSE exams.

“Many students scoring C+ and above have the potential to achieve an A. Do not lose hope—consult widely, revise diligently, read set books, maintain discipline, and stay positive,” she added.

Akello dismissed the notion that jobs are scarce, assuring students that hard work always yields opportunities.

She also cautioned against early pregnancies, especially during exams, urging girls to remain focused on their studies.

“Our goal is success. With the new Competency-Based Curriculum (CBE), there is no room for repetition. Work hard now to secure your future,” she emphasised.

Examiners and teachers provided valuable insights on how to tackle exam questions effectively.  Namai Shivakale of St Romanos Matawa noted that many students fail due to avoidable mistakes.

“Most schools have completed their syllabus and are now in serious revision. Proper exam techniques can make a significant difference,” he said.

Students expressed enthusiasm, with many resolving to improve their attitude toward challenging subjects.

Benson Musasia, Principal of St Vincent Butende, attributed their improved performance to preparedness and collaboration with neighbouring schools.

“We started at a low point, but through benchmarking and dedication, we are now competing at the top,” he said.

Similarly, Silas Mbinji, Principal of Inungo Secondary—a consistent top performer—vowed to maintain their high standards.

Outstanding students in various subjects were recognised, motivating others to strive for higher achievements. The scheme also plans to expand its membership to include more schools in future editions.

The event concluded with a renewed commitment to academic excellence, with students and teachers pledging to implement the strategies discussed.
