Principals in Masaba South Sub-county, Kisii County have expressed displeasure at their continued harassment over poor performance in last year’s KCSE, terming it unfortunate and uncalled for.
Led by the sub-county Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) chairman Robinson Moseti, they condemned the recent incidents where the community harassed teachers at Ibacho and Gekonge Mixed Secondary schools.
The official said the trend where parents vent their anger on the principals was wrong and unacceptable.
”Do not rush to close schools; it tarnishes the image of the Gusii community and will have long term consequences,” Moseti said.
Moseti, who is the Amasege SDA Mixed Secondary School Principal, asked the community to respect schools and embrace dialogue in resolving emerging conflicts.
The chairman noted that the performance of schools in national examination depends on all stakeholders and, therefore, school Heads should not be victimized.
KUPPET Kisii chapter chairman Laban Ouko condemned the incidents, terming them criminal.
He said teachers covered the syllabus and prepared the students for the examination, stressing that writing exams is the business of candidates.
“Flushing out school Heads is immoral. Perpetrators are hired by individuals with the intention to destabilize schools,” Ouko noted, linking it to moral decay.
He said they will not hesitate to withdraw teachers from insecure schools, take them to safer areas and have the hooligans arrested.
“The safety of a teacher is important. When one teacher is threatened, all teachers are threatened,” Ouko noted.
Echoing their sentiments, Human Rights activist Daniel Nyakundi warned parents against intimidating teachers, stressing they do noble work and deserve respect.
The activist and lawyer noted that parents and students themselves have not been victimized for the poor performance although they carry the bigger burden.
