Principals in Kirinyaga have urged the Government to return the EduAfya citing schools are getting drained and overstretched in catering for medication for sick students.

Speaking after receiving a bursary cheque from Mwea MP Mary Maingi, Kangai Mixed Secondary School Principal Beth Mutugi on Wednesday, March 19 Mutugi said that most schools have been forced to cater for medication for sick students since the administration cannot keep a sick learner in school.

She said this is to save a life since most students from the area are from poor families.

Mrs Mutugi also said that the monies meant for purchase of stationery or even food is not enough as it goes towards treating sick students.

“I am appealing to the government on behalf of other principals in the county to consider returning EduAfya as it assisted sick students, we do not receive capitation on time or even the money isn’t enough, in my school I have three case studies where the administration has paid treatment for sick students since you cannot keep them in school while sick, “said Mutugi.

She also added that the school has 510 students and expect the enrolment to rise.

“Imagine if a third of the students get sick what will we do, we don’t have enough cash, it’s a disaster principals are suffering in silence.”
