Former principal of Icaciri Girls Secondary School, Jane Muthoni, now an inmate at Langata Women’s Prison, has drawn widespread attention after attaining a perfect score in her first law examinations with the University of London.
Muthoni, formerly a school principal, is currently serving a 30-year jail term for the murder of her husband, Solomon Mwangi. During her incarceration, she enrolled in a law degree programme as part of the prison education initiative.
From Conviction to Academic Excellence
Her recent academic milestone has sparked admiration across the country, with many applauding the former principal’s resolve to reconstruct her life through education.
Muthoni was found guilty in connection with the death of her husband, who served as principal of Kiru Boys High School. She has consistently maintained that she did not kill the man she described as the love of her life, even following the court’s ruling.
Just two months after being admitted to Langata, the former principal expressed profound regret over the loss of her profession and the life she once enjoyed.

Now, the principal has redirected her energy toward her academic pursuits, transforming her prison term into an opportunity for self-improvement.
Justice Defenders and Prison Education
Justice Defenders, an organisation that facilitates prison education initiatives, confirmed that the former principal is among the 2025 cohort of incarcerated and uniformed candidates who sat their examinations under tight supervision at Langata and Kamiti prisons.
The organisation noted that structured academic programmes offer inmates a second chance to rebuild their futures through discipline and formal qualifications.

For this principal, the perfect score represents not just academic success, but a powerful statement about resilience and the transformative role of education even within prison walls.
