Lilian Muthoni, the principal of Kathekani Secondary School in Mtoto Andei, Makueni, has apologized to the family of a Form 3 student who tragically took his own life after being sent home for school fees.
David Mutua Musyoka was initially sent home to collect Ksh7,000, but his parents could only manage Ksh3,000 at that time.
Upon returning to school with the partial amount, Musyoka was turned away as he was required to bring the full balance. A day later, his body was found hanging from a toilet roof.

Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Muthoni clarified that she had no ill intentions and was simply adhering to school policy. She offered her heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, describing the tragedy as ‘devastating’.
“I have a strong connection with my students,” Muthoni said. “When I received the news of David’s passing, I was so distraught that I had to be admitted to hospital. Sending a student home for fees isn’t wrong, as these funds are used to provide food in the school, especially at the end of the month when resources are tight,” she said.
Muthoni further noted that a lack of communication and guidance may have contributed to the situation.
“Even if there are financial challenges, parents usually come to school to discuss them. It’s unfortunate that this tragedy occurred, and we must ensure such incidents don’t happen again because this student must have been confused whether to stay home or come to school,” she observed.
