The Presidential Award scheme program in Kenya has embarked on planting over 100,000 indigenous trees in schools across the country in honour of its founder late Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh.

According to Nelly Munalo, the Chief Executive Officer in the President’s Award Kenya while speaking in Kiambu Township Secondary school which shares a play field with Kiambu town Primary school in Kiambu town while planting trees in conjunction with Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI) and Kiambu township national government constituency development fund (NG-CDF) said they have started planting trees in schools around the country during the rainy season.

“We are also contributing to the national tree planting campaign and we said young people should be at the centre of making this development a success”, said Munalo.

She urged young people to plant one tree wherever they are as trees are beneficial even to the community.

“We are hoping to plant 100,000 trees during this rainy season and currently we are working with KEFRI and they are helping us with technical support, helping young people to develop their nurseries and helping young people to understand the kind of species they are growing and benefits,” said Munalo.

Kiambu MP Jude Njomo said NG-CDF has rehabilitated several grounds in the sub-county in complement of the ongoing construction of historic Kirigiti Stadium.

Njomo said that since the Kirigiti Stadium is in construction those seeking to use fields for their sporting activities can use the facilities once lockdown of sports is lifted.

“With the CDF team we have rehabilitated playing fields where we have leveled the ground, planted grass and fenced them. We have planted trees to conserve the environment and also in honor of the late Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip,” said Njomo.
