Presidential Working Party recommends review of secondary schools categorization

Education

The Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms has tabled its recommendations on the education sector to President William Ruto.

Some of the recommendations include the phasing out of traditional categorization of secondary schools into national, extra county, county and sub county schools with the 8-4-4 system and categorization of school in line with the career pathways of learners under the CBC system.

Under the new curriculum, the taskforce wants learners not to be confined to mandatory subjects in primary schools and that they should choose between combinations like English or Kiswahili, Maths or Science, and any other five subjects.

Consequently, this will lead to a leaner number of subjects at the Junior Secondary School level.

The Prof Raphael Munavu led taskforce wants the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) to be renamed the Kenya National Assessment Council (KNAC).

In tertiary institutions, the team proposed that the election of student council leaders be held every two years and that the appointment of Deans of schools and faculties in the universities should be done competitively.

They also want chancellors and their deputies to be elected by the university council.
