Prefects system to blame for school strikes, says Principal

By Erick Nyayiera

The Ministry of Education has been urged to review the policy on the election of school prefects into Students’ Leadership Council since it has numerous loopholes that affect school discipline.
Principal of the Year (POYA) who is the Ramba Boys High School Principal Canon James Okoyo noted that the criteria used which is largely decided through a voting system by students ought to be re-looked so that the administration is given the responsibility to vet potential prefects before approval.
He regretted that the current selection system gives too much power to students who will only settle for most influential students without looking at individual character thereby defeating the cause to manage discipline in schools.
Okoyo said the campaigns for the electoral seats in the council have always taken the political dimension where candidates use money to bribe other students who are the electorates which eventually sees the very corrupt and undisciplined candidates emerging victors.
Canon Okoyo attributed the rising cases of indiscipline in schools to certain student leaders who plan and execute bad behavior knowing that they have the support of a big chunk of students who are able to wreak havoc and cause serious damage.
Speaking to Education News in his office, Canon Okoyo also alleged that cults and devil worshiping have invaded schools and, therefore, appealed to principals to be extra careful and invest in creating intelligence networks to be able to make them contain the pathetic situation.
He also disclosed drug abuse was evident in schools further regretting that the perpetrators of the vice often get shielded and protected by naughty student leaders who also partake of the illicit drugs and substance abuse.
