Pre-Primary, lower grade leaners to receive 3 million face masks

Learners in pre-primary and lower primary grades will be the main beneficiaries of the government’s 7.5 million masks that will be distributed to schools, Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha has revealed.

Pre-primary 1 and 2 and Grade 1 to 3 will receive three million masks provided by the government through the Ministry of Health, as part of measures to curb the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking at Mwiki Primary School in Kiambu County on Monday when he received 7.5 million masks from the Ministry of Health, Magoha said schools with high population, those in informal settlements and special needs schools will be given priority in distribution of the masks.

“We are here because Mwiki Primary School is one of the most populated schools with an enrolment of about 4,000,” said Magoha.

The CS, however, said it is the responsibility of parents to provide masks to their children.

“Masks are part of the school uniform hence parents and guardians are expected to acquire them for their children,” he said.

Last December, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) donated 700,000 masks to Kenya for distribution to schools while KCB Foundation donated one million masks.
