Principal of the Year (POYA) James Okoyo has called for the merger of the two teacher unions to rid the teaching profession of incessant confusion.
Addressing Education News in Kisumu town, Okoyo who is the Principal Ramba High School in Siaya County appealed for efforts to be directed towards ensuring that teachers in Kenya have a sole unified entity capable of fighting for their rights without having to listen to myriad dissenting voices.
“As teachers of this nation we have a big problem bedeviling our profession, we do not have a singular and stronger formidable force that can speak on behalf of all teachers, often times we get treated to two dissenting voices from KNUT and KUPPET who most of the time struggle to jeopardize one another’s efforts”, Okoyo stated.
In December 2018, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) gifted the Principal of the Year (POYA) with a car for his enormous contribution in improving his school in all facets including academics.
It was the first time since its formation that it rewarded top teachers with gifts a move that KUPPET has not ventured into and is likely to instigate some form of supremacy competitions in the years to come.
On the policy directive on admissions, the Principal of the Year appealed to the Ministry to relax the tough stance and allow parents take their children to schools of their choices that they are able to afford including being able to visit their children without strain and stress.
