Population surges in public schools as private fold businesses

As learners resume face-to-face learning, parents whose children have been in private schools have resorted to taking them to public schools due to either financial impotence or closure of private schools.

Speaking to Education News, Unoa Primary School head teacher Mr. Philip Kiema said the institution is not in a position to admit new pupils.

The school head said the population in the school is overwhelming making the Covid-19 set protocols for instance social distance a tall order to achieve. According to him, the school is already struggling to deal with its current population which stands at 1006.

“I know parents like this school since it is located at the core of Wote Town but let us make use of other public schools around. It is not that we do not need pupils but we are overloaded,” lamented Kiema.

He called upon parents to try other public schools around for instance Kivandini Primary School.

“Anyway, I am happy since my Grade 4 which has 122 pupils and 133 pupils in Standard Eight showed almost 100 percent. Less than 20 of them didn’t show up in the first day but we hope they will report as the week goes by,” added Kiema.

He said the school has 26 classrooms in which 16 of them have been occupied by Grade 4 and Standard Eight pupils with each classroom carrying 15 pupils at a spacing of 1.5 meters.

He further noted that there is need for 326 more desks and appealed for help from the government and other interested parties.
