Poor exam performance shocks education boss

By Dave Opiyo

Poor performance recorded in Bungoma County in the 2017 national examinations took a centre stage during the Kenya Secondary School Heads Association workshop that was held in Kisumu County.
Jacob Onyiengo, County Director of Education Bungoma County was shocked by the poor performance that the county registered in 2017 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education saying it was not pleasing at all.
“Performance of schools in Bungoma County is not pleasing both in secondary and primary schools”, said Onyiengo.
He said that the county registered over 25, 000 candidates in 2017 KCSE but only 2184 candidates attained the mean grade of C+ and above.
The county education boss pointed out that it was the worst results the county has ever registered and school principals should work hard for better results.
He said that Bungoma has been an education giant before and therefore the education stakeholders should join hands in rejuvenating the sector.
“We attend this conference to see where we went wrong and what we can do to make sure that education has its meaning and we perform well in our county,” said Ong’iengo.
He challenged the school heads to make major changes in education sector and have good results come this year.
He also appealed to the political class to join hands with them in a move to change the results.
The County Teachers Service Commission Director Francis Odanga said the academic standards in the county are not at par and it requires combined efforts.
“Bungoma County should not be where it is now as per its education ability,’ said the TSC director.
He however called upon the teachers from Bungoma County to embrace teachers delocalization.
This is not a witch hunt to our teachers but a way of improving education services in our country therefore teachers we should cooperate when called upon by the TSC to move to another school in a different county said Mr. Odanga.
However school heads called upon the Teachers Service Commission to address acute shortage of teachers in the region to make a positive change in the results.
