Polytechnics to develop, assess curricula soon, Muoria reiterates

The State Department for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) is in the process of accrediting National Polytechnics as Qualification Awarding Institutions (QAIs), TVET Principal Secretary (PS) Dr. Esther Muoria has said.

Speaking while presiding over the launch of the 2023-2027 Strategic Plan at Kisumu National Polytechnic, Dr. Muoria said that these institutions will be expected to play a leading role in curriculum development, assessment and certification.

She noted that the QAI status also enables the Polytechnics to proceed and implement Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programmes.

Dr. Muoria said that the TVET Sector has embraced the  Greening Kenya initiative by participating in environment-friendly activities such as tree planting, implementation of sustainable eco-friendly operations such as having paperless meetings, and use of alternative cooking fuel from charcoal to curb deforestation.

“I have already directed all TVET institutions to start tree nurseries using species that are suitable to their specific regions. This will supplement the Government’s efforts to address climate change,” she said.

The PS lauded the Polytechnic for capturing the greening initiative in their Strategic Plan.

Dr. Muoria revealed that the TVET department is tapping into digital inter-connectivity to ensure the youth access global jobs at the comfort of their residence through the Jitume Initiative where TVET students and youth are equipped with digital skills to help them access online jobs.

She urged all TVET institutions to be at the forefront in embracing new technologies that demand transformation in skill development.
