Police in Mwala Sub-county have launched investigations at Mwala Girls High School after one of the dormitories burnt down on Monday morning.

Area Assistant County Commissioner Damaris Mutanu confirmed that the dormitory caught fire at around 5am when students were in class for morning studies and that alarm was raised by teachers, guards and villagers who later joined in to fight the fire.

“The cause of the fire is yet to be established and no injuries were reported during the incident. No arrests have been made so far but police are carrying out investigations to establish cause of the fire,” Ms. Mutanu said.

The dormitory fire incident at the school is the second incident in the Sub-county after another dormitory was brought down at Mbaikini Boys Secondary School on Saturday morning.

Area police boss Ronald Kirui said the fire at Mbaikini started at the dormitory while the students were taking morning breakfast at the school Dining Hall and that no student was injured during the incident.

“With the help of the members of the public, firefighters, villagers and police officers, we managed to stop the fire spreading but all bedding, students’ belongings and the roof of the dormitory with a 200 bed capacity was consumed by fire,” he added.

He urged parents to be patient and wait for the police to complete their investigations.

“So far police have not arrested any suspect in connection with the fire but we are still investigating the incident to establish the cause of the fire,” the police boss told journalists.

Cases of the school fires have been on the rise recently that also left parents in shock and several schools shut, putting the academic future of hundreds of students derailed.
