Police officers stationed at Central Police Station in Nairobi have been interdicted following the death of Albert Omondi Ojwang, a suspect who died while in police custody.
In a press release issued on Monday, June 9, 2025, by the National Police Service (NPS), the Service said the interdictions were necessary to facilitate a transparent and impartial investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).
“To ensure a thorough, impartial, and expeditious investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), the Inspector General of the National Police has ordered the interdiction of the following officers with immediate effect,” said Muchiri Nyaga, the Director of Corporate Communication and spokesperson for the NPS.

Among those interdicted are the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), the Duty Officer who was on shift during the night of the incident, the Cell Sentry, all officers at the Report Office that night, and any other officer who may have been involved.
This latest development comes days after the NPS confirmed that Ojwang had been arrested for false publication and was in lawful custody when he sustained fatal head injuries after allegedly hitting his head against a cell wall. He was rushed to Mbagathi Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The incident has sparked widespread public concern and calls for accountability across the country. In its statement, the NPS reiterated its commitment to justice and constitutional values.
“The NPS remains committed to upholding the rule of law, human rights, transparency and accountability within the Service,” Nyaga stated.
He added that further updates would be issued as the investigation continues. The case is being closely monitored by IPOA and various human rights organisations.
