Plan by Magoha to abolish school uniforms ill-advised, says activist

By Enock Okog’o

The Human Rights secretary for Kisii branch Mrs. Rachael Otundo has faulted the CS Prof. George Magoha over the school uniform remarks.

Otundo said that Magoha’s projection that his office would allow students to attend school without uniforms was wrong.

She said that if the students will put on civilian clothes, it would be difficult for teachers to identify them.

“This will open chances for strangers to enter our schools and make them insecure for our children,” she said.

Otundo thought that instead of Magoha contemplating on introducing such a policy where school children do not put on uniform, then he should rather advise the government to introduce cheaper means enabling parents to acquire uniforms without much financial struggle.

He reminded the CS that schools, unlike markets, are organized institutions that should be handled with decorum.

She asked the CS not to interfere too much with the Principals and head teachers in their administrative roles because they are trained and therefore knows what is best for learners.

She added that the 100 percent transition policy from primary to secondary school is good as it provides equal opportunity for access to education to all children.
