Teachers on social media have cried foul over delayed payments to contracted professionals by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), raising serious concerns about accountability and respect for educators.
For months now, teachers who participated in national examination processes supervision, invigilation, and marking, have lamented the silence from the council regarding their dues.
Many have openly expressed frustration, with some boldly stating that , “KNEC should be disbanded if it cannot meet its contractual obligations”. Others have gone further to criticize government oversight, arguing that , “the CS Treasury is sleeping on his job.”
At the centre of the uproar is the claim that , “it seems the recently passed supplementary budget didn’t capture examiners’ pay,”, leaving thousands of professionals stranded despite offering critical services to the education system. Even more alarming is the reality that, “six months after marking, nothing has hit teachers M-Pesa accounts,” a situation that has eroded trust and morale among educators.

Unions such as the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers and the Kenya National Union of Teachers have already raised red flags, urging KNEC to urgently honour its obligations.
However, their calls appear to have fallen on deaf ears, further aggravating the situation.
Teachers are now demanding action, insisting that, “it’s time KNEC respects its professionals.” Some examiners have even vowed to seek legal redress, with plans underway to move to court to compel the council to fulfill its contractual promises.
If left unresolved, this issue risks undermining the credibility of national examinations and demotivating the very professionals who ensure their integrity. Prompt payment is not just a financial obligation, it is a matter of dignity, trust, and respect for the teaching profession.
