Parliamentary committee on education asks universities to generate own revenue

The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education in Chuka University.

The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Education has challenged Universities to be innovative to generate their own revenue streams.

The Committee Chairperson MP Julius Melly (Tindiret) said the universities should also employ strategic selection of priority projects to be able to manage the limited resources available from the exchequer.

“Come up with economically viable and sustainable projects to enhance strategic expansion of the of higher learning institutions,” said. Melly.

The MP was speaking during a meeting with the Chuka University leadership during conclusion of inspection visits to universities in Central Kenya supervising implementation of University projects funded by the 2023/2024 Financial Year budget as well as engaging the institutions’ managements on an array of education issues, including status and impact of the role out of the new University Funding Model.

He also asked universities to effectively manage the funds for the growth and sustenance of higher education.

The chair s commended the Chuka University Vice-Chancellor Prof Henry Mutembei and the university management for fulfilling statutory financial obligations, demonstrating prudent resource utilisation and management, and successfully implementing the new funding model.

The MPs had  also visited the universities to know what initiatives the Universities had rolled out to reduce reliance on government grants, as well as projects undertaken in line with the Bottom UP Economic Transformation Agenda.

The deliberations also focused on potential areas of collaboration between Universities and Tertiary Vocational, Educational and Training Institutions.
