The National Assembly Committee on Education has commended the ongoing reforms in the education sector, describing them as timely and transformative.
Committee Chairperson Julius Melly praised the changes, noting that they are poised to strengthen the sector and nurture well-rounded learners.
“These reforms are the result of wide consultations and should receive full support from all stakeholders,” said Melly while addressing residents in his constituency. “They are designed not only to improve the quality of education but also to make our learners more holistic in their development.”
Melly also welcomed the Teachers Service Commission’s (TSC) planned recruitment of 24,000 teacher interns, emphasizing that the necessary funds have already been allocated for the exercise.
“This recruitment will push the number of teachers hired since 2022 to 100,000,” he said. “It is a clear indication of the government’s unwavering commitment to invest and improve education in this country.”

In his remarks, Melly also highlighted the critical role played by Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions. He encouraged young people across the country to take advantage of the opportunities provided by these institutions.
“TVETs are vital for equipping our youth with practical skills and preparing them for the job market,” he said. “We urge more young people to enroll and pursue technical training.”
The committee further pledged to advocate for increased budgetary allocations to the education sector, arguing that meaningful development cannot be achieved without prioritizing education.
“Education is the backbone of our nation. We will continue to push for more resources to be directed toward it,” Melly affirmed.
The teacher recruitment and broader sector reforms come at a time when the government is implementing various initiatives under the Competency-Based Education (CBE), which demands increased staffing and enhanced training.
