Parents in Bomet County have been urged to remain vigilant and take extra precautions to safeguard their children as schools close for the April holidays amid ongoing heavy rains.

County Disaster Management official Stanley Mutai warned that the region is expected to receive increased rainfall in the coming days, posing significant risks, especially to children.

“We are likely to experience heavy rainfall across the county, and this puts the lives of our children at great risk,” said Mutai while addressing the press.

He noted that several rivers in the area have already burst their banks, creating dangerous conditions for residents.

“Many rivers have overflowed, and we must remain cautious. Parents should not allow children to play near or fetch water from rivers, as this could easily lead to drowning,” he cautioned.

Mutai further warned residents against attempting to cross swollen rivers, emphasising the need for patience during the rainy season.

“We urge locals to avoid crossing flooded rivers. It is better to wait until water levels go down than to risk lives,” he said.

The disaster management official also called on motorists to exercise caution on the roads, noting that poor weather conditions increase the likelihood of accidents.

“Drivers must observe traffic rules and prioritise road safety at all times. The rains make roads slippery and dangerous,” he added.

With schools closing for the April holidays, Mutai emphasised that parents and guardians play a critical role in ensuring their children’s safety.

“This holiday period requires parents to be more attentive. Children should be guided and monitored closely to keep them out of harm’s way,” he said.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has also issued an alert warning of heavy rainfall in several parts of the country. The agency has urged residents to take necessary precautions to prevent flooding-related disasters.

Authorities continue to appeal for public vigilance and cooperation as the rains persist.
