Parents urged to support teachers in instilling discipline in children

Parents from Teso North Sub County in Busia County have been urged to support teachers in instilling discipline in their children in order for them to achieve good grades in school.

Speaking at Kopiya village near Changara market during the burial of Mzee Reuben Okelele, Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Teso branch and Busia county branch chairman Paul Ekweny decried the tendency of some parents who sue teachers who discipline their children.

Ekweny cited the Bible which allows for disciplining of children.

“Whoever wrote the Bible was not foolish to say children must be disciplined.  There is a tendency by some parents and the so called human rights activists in this area who are always on the road to Amagoro to sue teachers for disciplining pupils.” He complained.

He expressed concern that the area will continue registering poor results in exams if the tendency continues.

Ekweny further called on the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to give teachers some space arguing that the commission was being hard on them.

He praised the late Okelele for his passion for education.

“The late had thirty six children and he made sure that all of them went to school up to forth form and they are now working in various places. Let us emulate him and take our children to school so that they have a bright future.” He said.
