Parents have been urged to heightened vigilance in protecting their children from various forms of harm, including the devastating Covid-19 pandemic during the long holidays.

Speaking at Boikanga Ward, Kisii County Commissioner Allan Macharia said teachers played a big role by remaining with pupils in school during the learning session but added that parents have extra role of moulding and providing security to their children.

The administrator mourned a standard eight candidate who drowned shortly after he had sat for his examinations this year.

Clinton Obita 16, of Nyabusase Primary school, had gone to swim at River Gucha with his friends when he drowned.

According to his friends, they had swum successfully at the shallow part of the river when they venture into the deeper end.

The boy’s drowning comes barely two weeks after two other standard three and six pupils drowned at Rionsata River in South Mugirango Constituency.

The two pupils, Hezekiah Onami and Samuel Okonndo of Nyatwoni SDA Primary school, met their death when they were swimming.

Their teacher had taken them to the river with the rest of the class for a nature study.

However, the two boys dodged the teacher and went to swim at the lower part of the river as the teacher guided other pupils in the upper part of the river.

When it reached time for returning to school two the two boys were found missing from the group. When a search was started, their bodies were found floating on the still part of the river.

Kisii County Police commander Jabel Munene confirmed the death of the boys whose bodies were taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.
