Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on Education Julius Melly has urged parents to familiarize themselves with the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) for effective adoption, which he said has the full backing of Parliament.

Addressing the press, Melly said the CBC focuses on competencies and enables learners to identify and concentrate on them at a tender age.

“We support CBC because it changes learners from job seekers to job creators,” he noted.

Melly, a teacher by profession, further promised to allocate additional funds towards bursaries in his constituency, urging parents to ensure their children got an education.

“As an educationist, I have committed to allocate additional funds towards bursaries in my constituency. As I do this, I encourage parents to ensure their children get education so as to help improve their lives and transform the county’s economy,” he said.

The Presidential Working Party of Education Reforms (PWPER) recommended that the CBC be implemented with modifications.

Among the programmes that have already been implemented following the taskforce recommendations include assigning Junior Secondary School to primary school, adopting a new grading system, a new funding model and rationalization of new learning areas.
