Parents’ union against scrapping of fee subsidy

By Kevin Odera

The National Parents Association (NPA) is against the government’s decision of scrapping secondary school fee subsidy which has paved way for increment of fees for the academic calendar beginning January 2023.

The Association chairman, David Obuhatsa asked the government to consider the challenges affecting the parents at the moment.

“Since the Covid-19 pandemic, parents have been going through difficult times,” he said.

Obuhatsa urged the government not to burden parents further since they are yet to recover fully from the covid-19 pandemic effects in addition to drought and the high cost of living.

In a circular dated November 15, 2022 signed by outgoing basic education Principal Secretary Dr Julius Jwan, national and extra county schools in  Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisumu, Nyeri, Thika and Eldoret, which form Category ‘A’ of boarding schools, will from January 2023 charge Ksh53,554 per year, up  from Ksh45,000 they have been paying since the 2021 school calendar.

The deficit is maintained in all other schools.
