Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba has declared that parents will shoulder the cost of rebuilding Litein High School after ruling out government funding for damages estimated at Ksh69 million following a student riot in July 2025.

Speaking during a visit to the institution on Monday, October 27, Ogamba said the state will not use public funds to repair infrastructure destroyed through acts of indiscipline. He insisted that the financial burden must be borne by parents and the school community.

“The government won’t spend taxpayers’ money to rebuild schools destroyed by indiscipline. That is a burden that falls squarely on the parents,” Ogamba stated.

The riot left several dormitories and classrooms gutted by fire, forcing the temporary relocation of hundreds of students and prompting the school’s closure. The institution was reopened recently to allow candidates to sit for their national examinations.

However, Ogamba pledged limited assistance toward the construction of a perimeter wall around the school, citing the need to enhance security and prevent external interference.

Litein High School borders the busy Litein town centre, raising concerns about access and safety.

Investigations into the cause of the unrest are still ongoing, with some students and staff expected to record statements with authorities. The Ministry of Education has reiterated its commitment to enforcing discipline and accountability in schools, warning that institutions must take greater responsibility for internal governance.

The Ministry’s tough stance signals a tougher approach to school unrest and a shift toward school-led accountability in cases of arson.
