Parents, teachers urged to prevent student alcohol use

Parents have been advised to caution their children against using alcohol both at school and home, as it can negatively impact their lives.

Kenyenya Sub-County Officer Commanding Police Station (OCPD) Sepe Gomba highlighted that some teachers and parents allegedly send students to buy alcohol, leading them to start drinking illicit brews like chang’aa.

“I warn parents and teachers who lure innocent children into drinking beer and smoking because they are breaking the law,” he stated during a public baraza at Kerongorori location in Kisii County on Monday.

With schools closing for the August holiday, he urged parents to take time to discuss good behavior, hard work, and law obedience with their children. “Adults should embrace Christian teachings and values to set a good example for their children, fostering a better nation now and in the future,” he added.

Mr. Gomba expressed concern over the high use of chang’aa in the area, which has led to many school dropouts. He blamed the local chief and assistants for their laxity but commended parents who reported such issues to his office. He shared his phone number for security concerns and encouraged the community to look out for each other.

He called on clan elders, the church, and community policing groups to work together during the holiday to monitor youth activities and guide them towards harmonious living. He also urged teachers to support youth welfare by advising parents to engage their children in study groups and positive activities that promote good character development.

Mr. Gomba lamented the decline of traditional African communal upbringing, where every child was considered the responsibility of all parents in the community, leading to higher discipline and safety standards compared to the modern, technology-influenced lifestyle.
