Parents, teachers urged to involve children in indigenous tree planting

Nyamira County Governor Amos Nyaribo has called upon parents and teachers to involve children in planting indigenous tree planting programme to instill a culture of environmental conservation.

Speaking during a tree-planting event at Getangwa Primary School, the governor issued a stern warning to residents planting Eucalyptus trees in riparian and water catchment areas, citing soil strain and dryness.

“Parents and teachers should involve our children in indigenous tree planting programs to instill a culture of environmental conservation, as these trees are eco-friendly,” he emphasized.

Governor Nyaribo encouraged communities to consult their local chiefs for guidance on obtaining free seedlings, emphasizing the importance of water for life. He announced the prohibition of Eucalyptus planting in wetlands to preserve water sources.

To promote both environmental conservation and economic benefits, the governor urged schools and organizations to contact Kisii University for bamboo seedlings, emphasizing their use for timber production.

This concern coincides with a nationwide call to plant trees, aligning with President Ruto’s initiative to plant 15 billion trees by 2032 to combat climate change.

In Bimachoge Chache Constituency, Kisii County, NEMA Board Director Amos Andama stressed the significance of planting numerous trees for environmental beauty, fresh air, and sustenance for humans and animals.

Andama launched a tree planting and garbage collection program aimed at safeguarding River Gucha and other springs from contamination.
