Parents pull their daughters out of school because of Covid-19

Students ran helter skelter like headless chicken at NEP Girls National Secondary School on learning that their school matron had succumbed Covid-19 at Garissa Referral Hospital.

‘’There was pandemonium as parents hurriedly rushed  and pulled their daughters from the institution  after news of the fall of school matron spread like wildfire ,’’ said Ahmed Khere, a parent at the oldest secondary school  in former  North Eastern Province .

The school principal Zainab Kosar said that the school was closed for ten days after the death of the matron and that five girls also tested positive for Covid -19.

The school was established in 1974 and has a population of 866 students.

Garissa County Executive Committee Member for health Roble Nuno called upon residents to observe the Covid-19 health protocols.

He revealed that   so far 100 people in have succumbed to the Covid plague.

‘’We have dished out 5,605 doses of the first jab and 1,924 residents have received the second jab,’’ said the CECM.

Nuno revealed all the seven sub county hospitals in Garissa were serving as testing and vaccination centres and that refugee camps also had similar facilities.  

‘’Within the populous Garissa township we have such facilities at Iftin sub county hospital, Medina, police line and prison and Garissa Referral Hospital,’’ revealed Nuno.

Ahmed Mohamed, a parent said that some parents were still reluctant to take their girls back to NEP girls.

  He noted that the previous vaccine hesitancy is gone and most people are going in for the Covid -19 jab.
