Parents from Bomet and Kericho counties have decried what they term as the frequent and unfair practice of school principals sending students home due to unpaid fees.
The parents say the trend is disrupting learning and putting children’s safety at risk.
Led by Ann Kirui and Joyce Marusoi, the parents said the continued send-offs persist despite prior agreements with school administrations on fee payment plans.
“We’ve had discussions with the school heads and explained our situation, yet our children are still being sent home. It’s frustrating,” said Kirui during a press briefing in Bomet town on Sunday.
The parents said that the country’s harsh economic times have made it difficult for many families to pay school fees on time. They added that the constant interruptions in learning only worsen the situation for their children.
“Our children are missing valuable class time, and worse still, they have to travel long distances alone, which is not safe,” added Marusoi. “It also means we have to spend more on food and transport every time they are sent back to school.”

The parents have now appealed to school administrators to exercise more patience and empathy as families continue struggling financially. They also called on the national government to step in.
“We are urging the Ministry of Education to release capitation funds urgently so that schools can function without leaning heavily on parents who are already burdened,” said Kirui.
In response, several school principals defended their actions, saying they are left with little choice due to the government’s delay in disbursing capitation funds.
“Running a school without the necessary funds is extremely difficult. We depend on these payments to provide meals, pay support staff, and meet operational costs,” said one principal who requested anonymity.
With national exams around the corner, parents fear the continued disruptions will have a lasting impact on their children’s academic performance and morale.
