Parents lobby protests proposed school fee increment

Kenya National Parents Association (KNPA) Chairman, Nicholas Maiyo, has condemned the move by school principals of increasing fees as schools open.

While speaking to the press, Maiyo said the move is uncalled for and that they will not allow parents to be overburdened due to fee increment.

“Teachers have given their proposals that they want to increase fees but as I am talking, parents are having a hard time and the increment will overburden them as they are already suffering.

“As a parents union, we are not in the support of the proposal to increase of fees, we are not in support of it,” said Maiyo.

Head teachers while attending their annual Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) want secondary school fees increased by Sh8, 000 citing the increased cost of living.

“Anything that is done in the Ministry of Education all stakeholders must be included, our constitution is very clear and nothing can be passed without public participation  that is the law, head teachers   have  said their part and as parents we have refused  and we won’t allow it,” the  KNPA chairman said.

He called on parents not to pay more apart from the amount given by the Ministry of Education.

“Not even a single cent should be added on the fees. In 2021, we paid for four terms and it has been hard for us to pay the amount, what if it is increased? We will only pay 45,000 which was planned by the Ministry.

In case of any review, call us before effecting anything, our views are very paramount before coming up with any directive,”  Maiyo advised.
