Parents laud Ruto for domiciling JSS in primary schools

Parents from Kenyenya sub county in Kisii have thanked President William Ruto for adhering to the recommendations of the education reforms taskforce he appointed.

Led by Kenyenya sub county board of management chairman Pastor Nesoson Mokua, the parents thanked the government for agreeing to domicile Junior Secondary Schools (JSSs) in primary schools.

“The president’s decision was good and we hope there will be other more recommendations to fine tune the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) to suit the goals of this country,” said the pastor.

The parents argued that domiciling JSS in primary schools will give secondary schools boards of management ample time to construct adequate classrooms for learners when they eventually transit to secondary schools.

Pr. Mokua, who is also a lecturer at Elgon View Bugema University Kisii Campus, said the CBC is good because it recognizes learners’ individual talents.

He asked the curriculum developers to adjust it to fit the East African Examination status.

“CBC should be adjusted to make it acceptable to other members of the East African community,” he said.

The parents asked the Ministry of Education to consider blending CBC with the defunct 7-4-2-2 system where students did their CPE in primary schools and were selected to join high schools to pursue Arts, Science or Technical Subjects depending on the progress path followed in the nine year course in primary school.

They also asked that KPSEA exams done in Grade 6 should be used as a gateway to student placement in the subject choice rather than their award of certificates.

The parents praised President Ruto’s effort to unify East Africa by removing trade tariffs and urged him to adopt the same approach to reach agreeable terms where students from all of these countries can study at any level in any country without any intrigues in the curriculum.

Paul Mainga, one of the parents, asked the government to train teachers who can teach anywhere in the world instead of focusing on the satisfaction of demands of the CBC in the county alone.
