Parents in Kuresoi, Nakuru County, have raised concerns over the soaring cost of learning materials.
Led by Emmy Sigey and Joyce Kirui, they say purchasing essential items such as textbooks, uniforms, and stationery has become unaffordable for many families already grappling with the rising cost of living.
“We are struggling to put food on the table, and now we are expected to buy expensive books and other learning materials. Some of us might not be able to take our children back to school,” said Sigey during a parents’ meeting in Kuresoi.
The parents further appealed to school principals not to send learners home over unpaid school fees, citing widespread financial hardship.
“We ask school heads to be understanding. Sending our children home will only worsen the situation because we simply don’t have the money right now,” added Kirui.
Delayed Capitation
The parents also urged the national government to urgently release capitation funds, saying delays in disbursing the money have historically disrupted learning and school operations.

“When capitation is delayed, schools lack the resources to run effectively. Teachers can’t provide materials, and students suffer,” said another parent who attended the meeting.
Schools across the country rely on government capitation to fund key programs, including infrastructure development, classroom supplies, and feeding programs for day scholars. Prolonged delays often result in strained school budgets, forcing principals to pass the burden onto parents.
Local education stakeholders echoed the parents’ concerns, urging authorities to take swift action to ease the financial strain on schools and families.
“Education is a right, and no child should be denied access because of financial difficulties,” said a Kuresoi education officer. “We hope the government will expedite the capitation to prevent further disruptions.”
The appeal comes as schools reopen for the second term amid rising inflation. This has seen the prices of essential goods—including learning materials—skyrocket.
