Parents in Malindi Sub-County, Kilifi, have been directed to ensure that all school-age children are enrolled in school without discrimination based on gender.
Speaking recently in his office in Malindi town, Deputy County Commissioner David Lusava reminded parents that education is a fundamental responsibility and a powerful tool for the country’s rapid development. He noted that the roots of formal education in Kenya trace back to Kilifi County, where missionaries first introduced schooling in Rabai before it spread to other regions.
Lusava expressed concern that some parents in the area continue to neglect their duty of offering educational opportunities to their children, thereby denying them a chance at a brighter future. He warned that those who deliberately refuse to take their children to school will face arrest and prosecution.
Lusava urged parents to cooperate fully by prioritizing their children’s education, stressing that the nation’s future leaders must be equipped with knowledge to achieve their dreams. “The country’s rapid development actually needs educated people who will be charged with the responsibility of designing, planning and implementing community development projects,” he said.

At the same time, Lusava called on education stakeholders in Malindi to work together to ensure that no child is left out of school.
“You are therefore duty bound in ensuring that children are in schools,” he told stakeholders, adding that literacy is the foundation of stability and prosperity in any community.
He emphasized that a literate society is better positioned to foster development and maintain social cohesion, urging parents and stakeholders alike to take the directive seriously for the sake of the county’s and the country’s future.
