Parents have been challenged to support the talents and interests of their children while choosing careers.
Speaking during the premier of the film ‘Solo’ produced by Machakos School in conjunction with Foxton Media Ltd at Machakos International Convention Center, Deputy Director at the State Department of Youth Affairs, Olivia Ouko, said that the move will nurture talents for job creation as white color jobs were limited.
Ouko, who was the Chief Guest, said that the Arts and the entire creative economy was one of the five sectors that the government had prioritized to create employment opportunities.
“Art is a form of expression, entertainment and education. The government is prioritizing art for job creation due to diminishing opportunities for white-collar jobs. Talanta Hela is one of the initiatives,” she said.
She said that her Department had developed a Master Plan for Film for the next seven years in order to guide the development of the country’s film industry.
The Deputy Director revealed that the Plan is now at the validation stage.
The Machakos School film explores various themes such as drug abuse and parent-child relationships in the making of career choices.
Machakos Sub County Director of Education (SCDE) Simon Mutemi said that the message was timely since most young people in school were struggling with drug abuse.
“This issue requires a societal approach. It should not be left to teachers alone. The challenges of the students in the 1990s are different from the challenges of today,” he said.
Machakos County Chief Officer Charles Mutinda pledged to pay school fees for the main cast in the film until completion of their secondary school studies.
The School Principal Indimuli Kahi said that the institution was keen on giving students the opportunity to explore their talents and urged parents to support the same.
“As we invest in academics we must give the child an opportunity to showcase that which is inborn in them,” said Kahi.
