Parents from Gucha sub-county, Kisii county have decried the charging of extra levies for remedial lessons, and have asked Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba to intervene.

While speaking to the press, they alleged that at times pupils are not allowed into school because they have not paid the monies for the lessons which take place during morning and evening preps.

“We are dismayed and want the CS to clarify this matter because we feel robbed,” said Mary Nyabate, a parent.

She questioned the legality of the matter arguing that the education ministry provides enough capitation funds for every term.

Nyabate accused teachers of exploitation, saying that they had enough time to teach but wanted extra time to teach students on condition of extra fees.

“If they love their work, let them offer free lessons,” said Jared Maiteka, another parent.

He asked teachers to rather leave their children to study on their own during preps.

Maiteka wondered why all students were being forced to pay the levy but remedial classes are meant for slow ones.
