Parents of Metaburo Comprehensive School in South Mugirango Constituency, Kisii County have asked the Teachers Service Commission, (TSC) to employ more teachers to address the ongoing shortage and improve teacher- student ratio in the institution.

They said that there are only three teachers teaching many pupils in the junior classes leading to inadequate lessons delivery.

The parents added that they employed seven teachers through the school management committee to reinforce those employed by the TSC but lamented on the financial burden they are facing.

“We resolved to employ some teachers to help our children but the financial burden of paying them is too heavy for us.” Said Charles Kimaiga.

They blamed the government’s slow rate of recruitment of qualified teachers at the expense of learners and appealed to the Education CS Julius Ogamba to overhaul the mode of teachers’ recruitment in the country.

Their concern comes amid wide outcry from teachers unions on the shortage of teachers to facilitate the full implementation of the Compency based Curriculum, CBC.

They are pushing the government to employ more teachers saying that the ongoing recruitment of 24 000 teachers is small as compared to the bigger number of learners in the public schools.

The Unionists and parents argue that many teachers retire or die every year but the government does not employ enough teachers to fill the vacancies left behind.

They said that employing enough qualified teachers will open ways for quality education in the country in addition to the reduction of unemployment burden among the educated youths in the country.
