The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chairman Dr. Jamleck Muturi warned that he Commission will not condone the ongoing harassment of teachers by rogue parents taking the law into their hands, saying that those culpable will face the full force of the law.
Speaking in Embu County during Winas Sacco’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) Dr. Muturi stated that there were legal ways in which the aggrieved parents could follow to address their grievances instead of attacking teachers in full glare of learners.
“The teaching profession must be respected. Teachers and Headteachers must be respected. Anyone threatening teachers will face the full force of the law as outlined in the Teachers Act,” he said.
Dr. Muturi noted that the Commission will continue protecting teachers to ensure they perform their duties without intimidation, stressing that the credibility of the teaching profession must be upheld by all Kenyans.
”It is very demeaning to see a Headteacher being frog-matched while pupils are looking. How do you expect him to manage those boys and girls later? That is near impossible,” he said.
The TSC boss appealed to parents to respect teachers and if they have a burning issue, they should address it through the Board of Management in the respective schools.
His sentiments were echoed by KNUT Mbeere branch Executive Secretary Dickson Murunguma who said that teachers should not be subjected to harassment over the failure of students to do well in national exams.
Murunguma advised teachers to always ask for transfers if they realize that the environment they are working in is becoming hostile.
Embu Senator Alexander Mundigi urged TSC to ensure they fast-track all issues pertaining to the payment of teachers, adding that the amount paid to KNEC Invigilators was very little.
