The National Parents Association (NPA) has welcomed the move by the government to have school fees paid to National schools through the government’s e-Citizen platform.

NPA Chairman David Obuhatsa said that the move will ensure that taxpayers’ money is well managed and accounted for.

“This policy will ensure that poor parents who have difficulties in raising school fees are not forced to pay extra fees and levies that are imposed without the government’s approval. It’s high time all children have access to equity and quality education,” he said.

Obuhatsa highlighted that the move will also absolve Principals of the pressures of transparency and accountability, and ensure ample time to fully concentrate on running the schools and improving academic performance.

“This policy will highly improve the working relationship between school managers, parents and the government across the country,” he added.

The Chairman also noted that the policy will put an end to cases where school managers were unfairly victimized and even lost their jobs over alleged mismanagement of school funds.

However, he asked the government to give the Principals up to the end of Term 1 to comply, considering that some schools are still admitting Form 1 students and changing the system abruptly might cause hitches.

At the same time, Obuhatsa urged parents to urgently clear all pending balances to enable the school heads to run the schools effectively.
