Parents cry foul over alarming school pregnancies

By Enock Okong’o

Parents from Gucha South in Kisii County have expressed concern over alarming rising cases of school girl pregnancies in the county.
They asked both the National and County governments to intervene and arrest the situation. The parents concurred with the recent research that was done in the region by a local Non-Governmental Organisation called Touch Seven that showed that in 2017 alone, there were 1,500 pregnancies.
The report revealed that out of the total number, 100 were primary school children between 12 and 18 years majority of them being orphans and children of the single parents.
After the shocking news, Education News team contacted various education stake holders from the region who attributed the vice to high rates of poverty among other vices.
A church elder Job Ochari said the practice was there but distanced it from the plenty of sugarcane plantations in the area as many claimed that they provided hideouts locally called green lodgings for the errant adults on the innocent adolescents.
He blamed parents for lack of guidance and counselling their children
When contacted, Kisii County Education Director William Sugut denied having heard of the findings and asked those with report to contact his office for possible collective approach.
‘We aspire to better education standards in this region and any thing that stands on our way should be treated as a common enemy”, he said.
