Parents assured of students’ safety after food poisoning scare

Kathiani Level Four Medical Officer of Health (MOH) Virginia Nzau has assured parents, teachers and other stakeholders that there is no cause for alarm after 81 Ngoleni Secondary School students were discharged after being treated for alleged food poisoning.

Speaking to Education News on phone, she said that the students were treated and discharged as the issue was minor.

“It was a minor issue so no admissions were made, the students were treated and discharged on the same day,” she said.

The students had experienced vomiting, stomach ache and diarrhoea. It was established that the students suffered from gastrointestinal complications.

She confirmed that the Hospital is working closely with the school for surveillance and further treatment when need arises.

Samples of water from the school were taken to the National Public Health Laboratory for further testing.

Machakos Health County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Dr. Daniel Yumbya confirmed that the issue had been addressed adequately urging the members of the public not to panic.

“I wish to assure the students and members of the public that the necessary measures have been taken in regard to the issue at Ngoleni Secondary School.” He said.
