Parents asked to educate children living with disabilities

By Enock Okong’o

Former Independent Electoral Commission of Kenya Gucha Branch chairman Mr. Asteriko Atika has asked parents of children with disabilities to take them to school.

Addressing parents and other education stakeholders at Kebere primary school in Kisii county, Atika reminded them that the big four agenda in the country valued inclusive education as one of the goals to be achieved in the 21st century.

‘Denying these children access to education is equivalent to burying valued treasures in the soil.” He emphasized.

He revealed that most children with disabilities were excluded from access to quality education because their parents hid them at home.

“Children with disabilities will continue being dependants unless they are educated so as to be economically empowered,” he advised.

Mr. Atika ,who was flanked by former Gucha KNUT executive secretary Mr. Sam Nyairo, asked parents and teachers to support Competency Based Curriculum(CBC).

However, he opposed the roll out of refresher courses for teachers.

”TSC’s decision to retrain teachers is expensive and time consuming. The government should embark on the traditional in-service refresher courses for teachers,” he suggested.

He promised to hold regular sensitization meetings at village level to advocate for the education of children with disabilities and adult literacy.
