Parents of Nyosia Town in Nyaribari Chache Constituency are in fear for their children’s lives after monkeys recently started attacking them as they walk to school.
They said that the monkeys waylay the pupils in the morning and evening hours and ransack their bags suspiciously looking for food.
“Our children have declined to go to school because they fear these animals which bruise them and snatch their books,” said Mary Gesare, a parent.
She added that unrest was simmering among residents after the said monkeys also invaded their farms and destroyed their crops.
They invited County Agricultural Officers to visit the area and evaluate the damage for possible compensation.
The Area Chief confirmed the incident and attributed it to the clearance of the vegetation along River Gucha which was the monkeys’ habitat.
Kisii County Director of Education Philip Chirchir confirmed the menace and said that his office had conveyed the information to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) for immediate action.
“We have talked to the relevant authorities and hope that they will take the necessary steps,” he said.
Chirchir further advised parents to escort their children to school as the government mulls the way forward.
