Parents in Kisii County have accused the Ministry of Education for unfairness in the Form 1 placements for the 2023 KCPE candidates.
They say most of the children were taken to schools far away from home although they never selected those institutions, wondering about the criteria the ministry used in the process of distribution of the slots.
“Some of the affected are orphans who do not have any one to depend on. How do they expect such persons to get even fare to reach such far away schools?” wondered James Kiyondi.
One parent whose son scored 360 marks said he was called to a county school in Embu against his choice.
“The boy is disappointed and wants to repeat but he cannot go back because the curriculum has changed,” he said.
The parents asked Education CS Ezekiel Machogu to allow county directors to sort out the mess and assist the affected children to get admissions in the schools within easy reach.
Survey by Education News in both Kisii and Nyamira counties indicate that parents are scrambling for their children’s admission in local schools.
At Nyambaria National and Cardinal Otunga Mosocho High, ‘No Vacancy’ notices have been prominently displayed, adding desperation to the struggling parents.
One parent (name withheld) revealed how she was conned of 5000 shillings by a person who pretended to be a teacher in one of the schools, promising to buy an admission letter for her son.
“I gave him the money but I came to realize that he is not a teacher but a taxi driver at Suneka town,” she complained.
Kisii County Police Commander Charles Kases cautioned parents against falling easy prey to conmen who take advantage of their misery, especially in this time when money is hard to come by.
