Panic, confusion hits Isebania schools as gunfire rents the air

Isebania

There was panic and fear at Isebania Boys and St. Mary’s Mabera Girls’ School on Thursday after gunshots from the neighbouring Isebania Police Station rent the air.

Learning came to a standstill for the good part of Thursday as teachers attempted to control students who tried to run out of school for their safety.

“Even we teachers were scared but we contained ourselves quickly unlike the scared and curious learners who were not easy to control after the melee,” said one teacher.

At St. Mary’s Mabera Girls, some girls ran out of class and hid under their beds until late in the evening.

“Others refused to come out for supper but we used school cooks and guards to serve them food in the dormitories,” said another teacher.

According to Migori Police boss Clevet Kimaiyo, trouble started when angry mourners stormed the police station.

“They protested as they carried one of their own called Mwangi who was reportedly killed by unknown people,” he said.

He said that irate crowd removed the body of the deceased from the mortuary and carried it to the station to demand justice.

At some point, they threatened to burn the police station and that was when the police officers opened live bullets killing four of them.

“As they crowd threw stones to my officers and injured them I was also a victim as I was hit on the mouth,” he said.

The police boss said that the police were not for anybody who was out to disrupt the peace of innocent citizens.

The four bodies plus that of Mwangi were taken to St. Akidiva Mindira Mabera Mortuary Hospital awaiting identification.

He assured parents with learners at the affected schools that calmness had resumed.
