P1 holders in Narok decry being left out in recruitment

TSC CEO Dr Nancy Macharia

P1 holders in Trans Mara, Narok County have decried what they termed the unfairness in the recent replacement of teachers in the area.

Led by Sharon Chebet they said although Junior Secondary section is domiciled in primary schools, degree holders were considered instead of P1 holders.

“We came here very early in the morning expecting that P1 teachers would be considered but degree holders were given priority. This is very discouraging,” said Chebet.

Chebet is now suggesting that the exercise be done afresh, stating that they are well trained and ready to serve.

The sentiments were echoed by Florence Kirui, who lamented that majority of them have remained jobless for over 15 years, hence should be considered.

“Some of us have remained jobless for over 15 years and had hopes that we would succeed today. If they are now rejecting us, when will we be employed? Some of us have sunk into depression due to unemployment and we ask TSC to urgently address this matter,” said Kirui.

The teachers also appealed for the intervention of local leaders, claiming many of the successful candidates hailed from other regions.

TSC proposed to scrap the certificates and have the lowest cadre of teachers be a Diploma holder.

Initially, one qualified to go for a P1 teaching certificate after scoring a mean grade of D plain but the commission now wants to raise the entry grade into the profession to a C plain.
